Conferences and Seminars

bulletPeople and Work Unit Seminars

"The Truth behind Helping People Find Work" January 25th 2006

  • The aim of the seminar was to share the expertise of the People & Work Unit in "engaging people" within deprived communities, into learning activities which will result in worthwhile employment. Particularly focusing on increasing the abilities, ambitions, and means of the individual so they can face the challenge of learning, hence resulting in worthwhile employment.
  • Attending the seminar were people who worked within Community First Areas, ranging from management level, to front-line delivery.
  • The seminar proved highly successful with attendees able to share "good practice" and project ideas amongst each other and with the Unit. Feedback from the seminar illustrated that everyone "strongly agreed" that the seminar was relevant to their work, and that they could use the ideas they gained in the future.
  • A key finding from the day was that tackling unemployment within Community First Areas had proved very difficult, and a long-term strategy of supportive relevant learning was needed!
bulletPeople & Work Unit Summer Conference 2005

Creating the Masterplan June 29th 2005

  • The aim of the conference was to discuss 5 issues which the Unit believed to be important for "making community learning work". These issues included 1. Supporting Learning 2. Intensive Investment 3. Understanding the Local Economy 4. Relevant Learning Opportunities 5. Socially Inclusive (where are the men).
  • Over 70 delegates attended the conference, coming from a wide variety of organizations e.g. Private Enterprises, Local Authorities, Princess Trust, Universities, WAG.
  • The conference proved to be a enjoyable experience which included a drama presented by "Spectacle Theatre" based on the experience of real non-traditional learners participation in learning. We would like to thank Calvin Jones from Cardiff Universities Welsh Economy Research Unit, whos presentation proved highly valuable to many delegates and also the "Life Support" and "Build It" team leaders for their inspiring contributions to the workshops.
  • A paper entitled "Creating the Masterplan" summarizes  many of the ideas which were discussed during the event, this paper is free to download on this web-site under the "research papers" web-page.
